Review of Kindle: I dont know why they didnt liked my review. Because I have written it, I will post it here.
This is a review of basic kindle 10th generation.
This review is being posted after using the kindle for 1 month reading between 1 to 2 hours every day. There are great reviews of this product. So, I am adding only those which you may not find elsewhere.
It is divided in two segments, noting it's plus and minuses accordingly.
Like all others and also, by not being so rich that spending 8000 on just a black and white tablet would be an easy affair. I was really sceptical about explaining it's worth to me. Had been looking for it since 3 years, moment arrived, marks of class 12 came and I got it as my gift.
I read regularly, social media and YouTube feel shallow if you get habitual to read.
I think this is the best investment for me in my whole life. And hope to really justify it by adding value to life.
Pros
1. Screen is really great to read on it. I have not used Paperwhite or Oasis but after moving from books directly to kindle I think this is very close to book. And internal light adds more satisfaction.
2. Features like x-ray, bookmarking, high lighting, and vocabulary builder make it better than reading physical books.
3. Battery feels great now but was not same in beginning, initially I was getting around 2 to 3 days of battery life with Wi-Fi and level 7 to 9 brightness always on. But after the initial honeymoon period of reading for 3 - 5 hours per day. When I settled back on my regular schedule, it extended to one and a half week. After 4 days of charging and normal usage, battery is down to 63 percent. So, I hope to get near to 12 days of battery life. On approx. 30 min of average reading time.
4. You can actually get free books to read on kindle. There are many legal and totally white websites like project Gutenberg and archive.org.
And it would be really unfair not to acknowledge the fact that PDFs of books really float around internet to be found very easily if you go looking for it. But even through it if you are able to pay for the book then please pay for it. It takes work and deep work to write a book
6. Kindle prices of books are in most cases lower than acquiring a physical copy. Which is really a hassle in this time of covid because firstly, visit to book store is not possible, you are expected to sit in home and secondly upon exchanging a physical object with the vender somewhere you are fearing to not get the virus, even ordering from Amazon takes time and energy to go to door to collect it. And finally to sanitize and quarantine the book.😅😅😅
7. And when the sales like prime day Diwali Holi etc, comes you may get book at extra discounted prices so wait for them.
8. Once you buy a book or you acquire a book, finding a place to store it would be your last thing to worry about. (because your room is already full of books)
8 GB is the official storage that you are promised to get in kindle. But you get 6 and a quarter in reality. That is really enough if you ask me.
The largest book I know is Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace, it is of 1100 pages, but when download you get it near to 2MB, so with near to 6 GB of data if every book of yours is of Infinite Jest then you can still store 3000 fucking books at any moment in this kindle. And if you count cloud storage too. Then it is literally unlimited book storage.
8. PDF experience is not that bad. People are just bashing it for not being able to read PDFs. It's actually decent and if you read your book or document on landscape mode you do not need to zoom, which is where it lacks. But if you just want to read and highlight it works great.
You may not get that 90Hz fluency but if you want to read a 50 page document then you don't need that fluency you want your eyes not to water at the end of reading.
9. Earlier I was hoping to get second hand version of last generation basic kindle. But now having this kindle with internal light looks, it would had been a very bad decision, if I had gone for it. The numbers that there are only 4 LEDs to light up the screen doesn't tell you much about it. But believe me it is more than enough to need to read. It provides with 15 adjustable levels, easy to see, uniform and non eye straining stream of light to read.
10. I will give that credit to Amazon buying a book, Amazon has made that process really smooth and flawless and I think after the development of UPI it has achieved new levels. You select a book either you pay with Amazon wallet money you added earlier or Amazon UPI or your UPI id you enter the id a notification pops up on your app you enter your pin now your book is in your kindle ready to be read. It takes from selecting your book and having it in front of you in literally 30 seconds or less. And that is really a revolutionary feat in book buying industry.
11. Transfer to kindle through the provided mail to send any document to your kindle works really good and flawlessly. I also some time use it to transfer my scanned copy of academic notes to read on kindle and it gives a good experience altogether.
Cons
1. You can't rotate it both sides to landscape mode. which is possible but I think amazon is not adding just to save value for its oasis?
2. There is no way to note statistics, sucks really sucks, there is literally framework to record every activity on kindle, but still amazon does not provides with a way to see it. why?
* Free time is not available here in India. Again amazon being amazon. ** you can now view the reading statistics on kindle android app.
3. You will not able to export notes through of other than official books which you buy from amazon kindle store. Still Amazon being Amazon.
4. Just a complain of my father and I think that is obvious too. There is not adapter for the supplied data cable to charge. For a device you are charging 8k you should at-least provide a adapter and basic cover which is necessary for this fragile type of screen.
5. Earlier USB port feels old school. I have to keep a separate cable for it.
6. Reading with one hand while sleeping position is still not a very comfortable position
7. Cost is not 8k, it comes down to near to 9.25, if going with official case then it will be near to 10k.
8. There is no easy way to hold your kindle firmly with one hand. So, there is a trick I found, you can get a hook or pop socket for cheap(it bought is for 15) and paste it there on back of cover with fevi-quick to make it easier to hold. You can see the picture attached for reference.
9. No prime delivery or fast delivery.
10. Screen being glare free still feels very delicate. I am not Jerry who rigs everything, but I think it will scratch at level 1 with deeper grooves at level 2. So, case is mandatory, which raises a costly tablet's cost to make it more costly.
Verdict
This is overall a very good product and if you like to read and could invest in this thing, than you should definitely try it, I don't think your investment would go waste. And even if you wont like it after 15 days. Return it, they wont ask any questions.
Pro tip: if you are not in hurry to buy it please wait till any of the sale comes(prime day sale and in Diwali I noticed that)@. And every time sale comes the price falls down to 6400. So, in that sense, you could acquire kindle with case and insurance at 8000.
There are very minute features which amazon could release through a software update to make it an even better product but they are not doing it, this disappoints me. Are you not updating them because you have a kind of monopoly in e-reader market in India? than you are not living up to your expectations, Amazon.
